Nora, Javo and Gracie go to Sydney for a holiday. When he returns, he and Nora reunite, but he is seeing another woman, the beautiful actress Lillian (Candy Raymond). Javo gets thrown in jail in Bangkok for a few months. Nora calls it off and tries to move on, drifting towards an affair with Willie (Harold Hopkins), a drummer in a rising rock'n roll band, who manages to alienate singer Angela (Christina Amphlett) by making a play for Nora. They are mad about each other, except that Javo keeps disappearing to chase heroin and acting jobs, and then decides to head off to Thailand. Javo becomes a regular around the house and in Nora's bed. Gracie accepts her mother's choice, as does Martin.

Nora's friend (and Clive's partner) Eve (Cathy Downes) warns her that Javo's a heroin user, but Nora is already in love.

Nora feels a powerful attraction to Javo's reckless charm. Javo (Colin Friels) is an actor, a friend of Nora's boyfriend Martin (Tim Burns).

Nora (Noni Hazlehurst) lives with her 11-year-old daughter Gracie (Alice Garner) in a crowded share house run by the amiable Clive (Michael Caton) and works for an alternative magazine, while trying to write fiction. I was happy then, it was early summer and at night our backyard smelt like the country, and then, as it always happens, everything began to heave and change … But now Martin was unhappy and to my shame I wasn't concerned with kindness. He slept very still in my bed, jumped up with the kids in the early morning, and somehow put up with my crankiness and fits of wandering heart. He was as much a part of our household as any outsider could have been. There was Martin teetering on the dizzy edge of smack like so many others that summer. It wasn't as if I didn't already have someone to love. (then after titles and Nora, swimming at the baths, agrees to go down the coast to the bay with Javo and Martin): Sometimes, long afterwards, it's possible to look back and see the beginning of things, the point at which you'd already plunged in, while at the time you thought you were only testing the water with your toe … Opening voice over by the character Nora during head credits: Inner city Melbourne in the late 1970s, early 1980s.
